European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) Chief Annalisa Corrado urged the public and candidates seeking to reach the runoff to calmly await the official results following the close of voting on April 12.

Speaking to Andina News Agency, she extended a call "to moderate hate speech and attacks on social media that may incite violence."

"We call on the Peruvian people and the candidates to allow the electoral administration and Peruvian institutions to complete their work and to calmly await the first round’s final results," she expressed.

Difficulties

The European Parliament member indicated that the April 12 electoral process faced difficulties, some of them serious, but that overall the elections were well organized.

"We reiterate that these problems must be investigated, but it must also be added that these events affected only part of the citizenry," Corrado stated.

The EU EOM chief mentioned that errors in organizing the transport of electoral materials, delays in opening polling places, and the non-opening of 13 of them "caused a very serious situation that affected the right to vote."

"However, the National Elections Board (JNE) took measures swiftly to mitigate those errors. We highlighted our positive assessment of that decision, which prioritized the possibility for affected citizens in Lima to exercise their right to vote," she added.
