Peru: President receives Armed Forces report on military actions in VRAEM

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Thursday received the report from the Joint Command of the Armed Forces (CCFFAA) on the military and police actions in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM) near the town in which 16 citizens were murdered last weekend.

"We have been informed about what happened and about the measures that are being taken to prevent it from happening again, as well as to punish those who perpetrated this act of barbarism," he expressed.

The Commander-in-Chief arrived this morning at Mazamari Counterinsurgency Base, located in Satipo Province, where he met with the head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, Cesar Astudillo.

"Rest assured that this will not go unpunished and that the Armed Forces and the National Police are working together to protect all citizens in this area," he expressed.

In a statement to the press, the Head of State indicated that his administration is working firmly and energetically to prevent terrorism and drug trafficking from threatening the local population.

Likewise, the top official said that those elements often force farmers to engage in the illegal cultivation of coca leaves in order to take advantage of this product for narcotics.

After visiting the Counterinsurgency Base, Mr. Sagasti flew to Oxapampa in Pasco Province to meet there with the regional governors of the country's central area.
