Peru President condemns assault on Lava Jato case Prosecutor

14:45 | Tucume (Lambayeque region), Mar. 19.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday expressed his rejection of the assault against Lava Jato case Prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez by supporters of Keiko Fujimori, who currently serves 36-month preventive detention over alleged money laundering charges.

"People can disagree, but disagreements shall not lead to physical aggression. We must be tolerant," the Head of State expressed in this sense.

According to the top official, the fight against corruption involves firmness but no assaults.

Odebrecht's civil reparations

When asked about the civil reparation worth S/610 million (about US$182 million) Odebrecht must pay the Peruvian State —for having bribed former government officials in the past— President Vizcarra indicated he respects institutions and the separation of powers

"The justice administration system made that proposal, and we respect it. We may have a different opinion, but in general, we respect and support what must be done, as it is an autonomous and independent institution that is in charge of fighting corruption," the top official added.

In this sense, the Head of State pointed out the Public Ministry has the power to define its work strategy through the collaboration agreement signed between it and Odebrecht last February.

In Peru, the Public Ministry is independent from the Executive Branch.
