Peru could have up to half a million candidates in the 2026 electoral processes, including aspirants to the Presidency of the Republic, Congress, Andean Parliament, as well as regional and municipal (subnational) elections.

This estimate was presented by National Elections Board (JNE) Chairman Roberto Burneo, during his participation in the "Jueves Minero" (Mining Thursday) forum organized by the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP).

According to the JNE chairman's projections, approximately 10,400 candidates will compete for positions in the next government and the new bicameral Congress: 150 candidates for presidential tickets, 3,000 for Senate seats, 6,500 for the Chamber of Deputies, and around 750 for the Andean Parliament.

"In October 2026, when municipal and regional elections will be held, the scenario becomes even more complex. In addition to the 41 registered parties, there are 98 registered regional movements. So, we could say there would be around 150 political organizations —between parties and regional movements— taking part in the municipal and regional elections," Burneo explained.

"If that doesn't sound alarming, we could have around half a million candidates, including those running for mayoral posts, regional governors, regional councilors, municipal councilors, and authorities in rural communities," he added.

"Of these, 16 political parties could complete their registration in time to participate in the 2026 General Elections," he said.

The JNE head further highlighted that the new electoral process establishes the distribution of seats for the election of candidates to the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

"What is at stake are 60 Senate seats and 130 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. That includes 30 senators for each electoral district and 30 for multi-member districts. As for the Chamber of Deputies, there are 28 multi-member districts and 102 seats allocated based on the number of voters," Burneo detailed.
