Peru's famed intellectual Denegri dies aged 80

Peru's renowned intellectual Marco Aurelio Denegri passed away on Friday at the age of 80 years, Chairman of State-run National Institute of Radio and Television of Peru (IRTP) Hugo Coya informed.

Denegri's medical condition had deteriorated in the last few hours until his death early this morning.

He had been hospitalized at Edgardo Rebagliati Hospital since last May. His death was correlated with pulmonary fibrosis.

Coya expressed his condolences to the family and the entire country for such an irreparable loss.


Marco Aurelio Denegri was born in Lima on May 16, 1938. He did outstanding work in the field of sexology, plus he addressed literary criticism and linguistics.

He hosted the TV show "A Solas con (Along with) Marco Aurelio Denegri" between 1997 and 2000 on Cable Magico Cultural channel, currently off the air.

Likewise, he was the presenter of "La Funcion de la Palabra" (The Function of the Word), a much-remembered TV program —aired by State-run channel TV Peru— that covered several cultural aspects.


Culture Ministry

Peru's Ministry of Culture mourned Denegri, noting his death leaves a void in art and culture promotion.
