Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group Coordinator Rafael Vela on Monday confirmed that he will assume the defense of the Peruvian State in the appeal filed by Alejandro Toledo against the 20-year prison recently imposed on him in the Southern Interoceanic case.

Likewise, the prosecutor reminded reporters that the aforementioned former president is still awaiting trial for the Ecoteva case.

Furthermore, Vela indicated that the aforementioned phase of this process has been ongoing for a year,
but Toledo will only join it following the United States' decision to approve the extradition request made in this regard.

Although there is no extradition agreement between Peru and Israel, where the former first lady is believed to be, he recalled that "Peru has previously handed over fellow citizens" to that country.

As for why preventive detention has just been requested against Jorge Barata, executive of Brazilian company Odebrecht, Vela stated that this stems from the Brazilian citizen decision to declare himself innocent in the Gasoducto Sur (Southern Gas Pipeline) case, contradicting his initial position as a cooperating witness.

This occurred last year and will not hinder the prosecution of former President Ollanta Humala in this same case, the prosecutor said.

In this regard, he indicated that "orders for his location and arrest" have already been issued against Barata, which are known to the Brazilian authorities.

"He cannot leave Brazil because, otherwise, he would be arrested in another country," Vela noted.
