Peru's President: General elections to be held in April

| Lima, Mar. 13.
The
President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti
reaffirmed that the
general elections will be held on April 11
, despite the perception of a
disinformation campaign aimed at postponing them.
"They will be held on the scheduled date anyway," Mr. Sagasti told ATV Noticias.
In his opinion,
disinformation campaigns are "about creating a climate of political instability that does not exist in the real world."
"It seems to me that there are attempts to postpone the elections," the Head of State noted in this sense
, adding that he is "absolutely against this possibility."
Within this framework, the top official
lamented that disinformation —involving political issues and COVID-19 vaccines— generates mistrust among citizens.
Thus,
the statesman indicated that Peru is the country in Latin America in which people trust one another the least.
Concerning polling station members, the top official said that —if the State is not able to vaccinate them against COVID-19 prior to election day— the State will try to make them strictly follow the protocol defined by the electoral bodies for the voting day.
"We are assessing what else could be done for them, especially those with comorbidities," he said.
