Renowned Peruvian painter Fernando de Szyszlo said Machu Picchu is a work of art that combines the landscape, stones, jungle and the thin lines of the silver Urubamba river.
"We could use a phrase from the Bible to explain the feeling you get when you are there and it says: ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God.’ That is the feeling I got when I was there. It is more than dramatic, it is sacred. You get the feeling that there is something different, superior, which goes beyond the human being."
The artist went on to say that he has also visited the Pyramids in Egypt and the Taj Mahal in India, but "nothing is compared to what he felt in Cusco."
De Szyszlo was living in Paris before visiting the Inca Citadel for the first time.
"The only thing I wanted to do once I came back to Peru was to visit Machu Picchu. It was 1951 and I was 26 years old. I have visited the citadel many times since then. I have even climbed the Huayna Picchu twice," he said.
