Peru: Prosecutor requests house arrest for ex-President Kuczynski

Peruvian Prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez on Wednesday requested home detention for ex-President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski over alleged asset laundering crimes, and withdrew from the previous inquiry for 36-month preventive detention against him, within the framework of the Odebrecht case.

The Prosecutor submitted this request to the Third Preparatory Investigation Court.

The ex-Head of State —who currently serves a 10-day preliminary detention— was not present at the hearing, as he had been hospitalized in a clinic due to heart problems.

According to Perez, this new request is due to 80-year-old Kuczynski's delicate state of health.

The Prosecutor also requested preventive detention for Kuczynski's personal secretary Gloria Kisic and driver Jose Luis Bernaola, who were released —from preliminary detention— two days ago.

Led by Judge Jorge Chavez Tamariz, the session was adjourned this afternoon and will resume tomorrow.

About

As is known, the investigation is based on projects linked to Brazilian corruption-tainted Odebrecht company's South Interoceanic Highway Project —Stretches 2 and 3— (South IIRSA) and Olmos Irrigation Project. Both of them had been awarded to the corporation.

Pedro Pablo Kuczynski served as President of Peru between July 2016 and March 2018. He offered his resignation on March 21 following the release of secret recordings that entangled him in a scandal on the eve of an impeachment vote.

Back then, a group of legislators from opposition parties filed a presidential impeachment motion —on the grounds of moral incapacity— after he had survived a previous impeachment vote back in December.

This new motion was intended to oust Kuczynski for alleged links with Odebrecht.
