Arellano Marketing's multi-client studies forecast that Peru's qualification for its first World Cup since 1982 will have a 1% impact on the country's gross domestic product (GDP) growth.
Peru's GDP will hit S/702 billion this year, meaning US$214 billion, considering an exchange rate of S/3.28 per dollar, according to the latest Multiannual Macroeconomic Framework issued by the Economy and Finance Ministry.
Arnaldo Aguirre —manager at the said research and marketing consulting company— believes Peru's qualification will create business opportunities for enterprises in different industries across the country.
Aguirre admits Gareca team's achievement is a milestone in Peru's soccer history because the country will reach the World Cup after more than three decades.
"56% of Peruvians haven't been able to see Peru at a World Cup. [In fact] More than half of the country has not seen its national soccer team participate in a tournament of this nature," he was quoted as saying.
Likewise, Aguirre highlighted Peruvians' passion for soccer and reported 78% of the population support a national soccer club, while 83% watch matches on TV.
