Venezuelans in Lima organize demonstration against Maduro

18:37 | Lima, Feb. 9.

Venezuelans residing in Lima are organizing a demonstration against President Nicolas Maduro, who was invited to take part in the 8th Summit of the Americas, to be held in Peru's capital city on April 13 and 14.

"We are calling for a series of demonstrations, not only the Venezuelan community but also friends of Venezuela, political parties, and Peruvians who are outraged by his visit," Venezuelan activist Paulina Facchin expressed.

According to state-run TV Peru channel, one of the protests will take place on April 12, when the Venezuelan leader is supposed to arrive in Lima to attend the Summit of the Americas.

Another rally will be held in support of the multi-party motion submitted to the Peruvian Congress with the purpose of declaring Maduro persona non-grata.

"We are grateful because it is a display of solidarity," Facchin underlined.

"We understand courts must punish crimes against humanity, but we, the citizens, have the responsibility to morally sanction and raise our voice in a democratic country like Peru, where there is freedom of expression," she added.

The activist called on Peruvian left-wing groups to reconsider their stance on Venezuela, noting her fellow citizens live under a dictatorship and that human rights are the same for everyone.
