Peru convenes Lima Group meeting to address Venezuelan situation

12:05 | Lima, Feb. 9.

The Government of Peru has called a meeting of the "Lima Group" for February 13 to assess the possible measures to be adopted in the face of the current political situation in Venezuela.

The announcement came through a statement from its Foreign Affairs Ministry, which invited members of the group to attend the gathering in the Peruvian capital.

The statement emphasized that the decision of Venezuelan electoral authorities to call early elections for April 22 would not allow a fair, free, transparent and democratic process.

The call was made Thursday after Venezuela's National Electoral Council (CNE) President Tibisay Lucena disclosed that the country's presidential elections will be held on April 22.

Lucena's announcement fulfilled the decree of the ruling National Constituent Assembly (ANC) that ordered to make these elections before May.

On January 23, the Lima Group rejected ANC's unilateral decision to hold presidential elections in Venezuela before April 30, considering they are usually held by the end of the year.

The Lima Group is composed of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay and Peru.
