US-based company Anadarko will soon begin hydrocarbon exploration in Peruvian waters along the coast of Northern La Libertad region, Energy and Mines Minister Cayetana Aljovin announced on Tuesday.
"We have good news. A company will carry out exploration activities along the coast of La Libertad. I'm talking about
Anadarko, which holds a number of investments in the region, like in Colombia, where it made a major investment in natural gas," the official told State-run broadcaster TV Peru.
According to
Aljovin, the current administration found a depressed
hydrocarbon sector, a very slow investment response and a production level of 50,000 barrels per day, when Peru's potential is five to six times greater than that.
"We are preparing a new Organic Hydrocarbons Law to promote investments, especially now that we have North Peruvian Oil Pipeline and Talara Refinery, and that's why hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation is needed," she stated.
Deputy Hydrocarbon Ministry
Finally, she said the Government has proposed the creation of a Deputy Hydrocarbon Ministry, due to the need for investment in exploration and exploitation activities.
