UN: Peru reiterates commitment to reduce poverty

Peruvian Development and Social Inclusion Minister Jorge Melendez on Monday restated the Inca country's commitment to allocate all possible resources to reducing poverty.

Speaking during the 56th Session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development in New York, the government official underlined Peru's social agenda is in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Minister Melendez highlighted Peru's poverty eradication measures, such as the strengthening of links between conditional cash transfer programs, financial inclusion initiatives, and rural productive programs. 

The Development and Social Inclusion head also underlined the reinforcement of State presence among Amazon native communities through vessels that bring public services to remote populations. 

In addition, Melendez addressed progress made in vocational training and citizen security. 

Lastly, he reiterated the commitment of all Peruvian authorities to preventing and reducing anemia among infants.

On Tuesday, Minister Melendez will meet with UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Director for Latin America and the Caribbean Jessica Faieta to discuss Peru’s challenges in terms of development and social inclusion, which merit the cooperation of the UN system.
