South America's highest-paid soccer player Guerrero to stay unpaid

17:01 | Lima, Jan. 15.

Following Flamengo FC's announcement about suspending Paolo Guerrero's contract —until FIFA clarifies the player's situation— it has been revealed Peru's top striker will stop receiving a US$280,000 monthly salary.

According to Chilean newspaper El Mercurio, the 33-year-old athlete leads the ranking of South America's highest-paid soccer players, with US$280,000.

The Peruvian forward is ahead of Argentinean Fernando Gago, who earns US$110,000 per month at Boca Juniors.

Chile's Colo-Colo player Jorge Valdivia occupies the third place (US$100,000), followed by Paraguayan La Libertad's Oscar Cardozo (US$100,000).

Ecuadorian Damian Diaz holds the fifth position (US$83,000), whereas Atletico Junior's Teofilo Gutierrez ranks sixth (US$70,000).

Offers

While in Flamengo FC, Guerrero got two offers to leave the Brazilian soccer league.

The first one came from Italy's Bologna FC, and the most recent was proposed by China's Beijing Guoan FC.

Both teams not only were willing to pay €6 million —Guerrero's exit clause— but also to sign a two-year contract worth €5 million per season.

Sanction

As is known, FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided to suspend Guerrero for one year after analyzing the adverse analytical result of the anti-doping test conducted on him following a Qualifiers match against Argentina on October 5.

Later, it decided to reduce such suspension to six months —a decision which will allow Peru's top forward to play the 2018 World Cup.

Guerrero's defense is confident the sanction imposed by FIFA on the striker will be completely lifted at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).
