Peru's qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup will strengthen its country brand, given the worldwide popularity of this sporting event, thus attracting further investment from abroad, Chilean consulting company Hexagon Group said.

"A World Cup qualification revitalizes consumption and investment, as optimism makes the country more attractive. Plus, Peru's tourism and gastronomy will become more notable overseas," Hexagon Group Manager Roberto Salazar told Andina news agency.

Taking part in an international mega-event such as the 2018 World Cup raises interest from all the countries since the image of nations is put on display.

"The Peruvian squad will be seen all over the world and, if the country brand issue is handled in a proper way, it will meet the same fate at the said international showcase, becoming more attractive to investment," he informed.

Impact on GDP

Salazar believes a country's World Cup qualification has a positive impact on its economic growth. That was the case of Chile and Ecuador, where such achievement contributed 0.5% and 1%, respectively, to their GDP growth.

"Chile saw strong growth in consumption as a result of World Cup qualifications and the last two Copa America tournaments, because people were happy and spent money, thus reviving the economy," he explained.
