Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski will exercise his right to defense during a Congress plenary session to discuss a request to impeach him. Below is an overview of today's event.
Arrival at Congress
Upon arrival, Peru's top official will be welcomed with corresponding honors.
He will be waiting at the Congress' Ambassadors Hall.
Later, he will head to the plenary session hall, where Congress Chairman Luis Galarreta will be waiting for him.
Then, Mr. Kuczynski will step into the middle of the Chamber to address lawmakers, joined by his lawyer Alberto Borea.
Defending his stance
The leader will be given
at least two hours to present his defense before Congress, in response to a motion seeking to impeach him for moral incapacity.
He may leave the facilities after his address if deemed appropriate.
Mr. Kuczynski is not expected to answer questions during his speech.
Debate
According to the Parliament's Board of Spokespersons, the debate will last at least four hours and a half, without considering interruptions and extra time.
Voting
The
impeachment motion requires 87 (two-thirds) out of 130 votes to pass, no matter absences.
Possible scenarios
An impeachment resolution shall be published in El Peruano official gazette or a newspaper of general circulation within the next 24 hours.
In this case, the Parliament's Board of Spokespersons will hold an emergency meeting to plan Vizcarra's inauguration, which might take place on Friday morning.
