Independence Day celebrations came early this year for Peruvian Consulate in Brussels, which put on a special cultural event in Dinant.

Held on July 1, the event featured various Peruvian dances and traditional music from Andean Mantaro Valley.

Performances featured saxophonist Aurelia Saavedra, folklore group 'Ayni' and 'Peru Andino' dancers.

The event was attended by local authorities, members of the diplomatic and consular corps, as well as the Peruvian community based in Belgium and Luxembourg.

Independence

National holidays are celebrations of Peru's independence from the Spanish Empire. They consist of two days: July 28, in commemoration of Peru's independence won by Jose de San Martin; and July 29, in honor of Armed Forces and National Police of Peru.

On July 28, 1821, the Andean nation declared independence from Spain, which had colonized the country nearly three centuries before.
