Belgium Ambassador to Peru Michel Dewez highlighted the increasing demand for Peruvian products in his country and the interest of Belgian firms in increasing business exchange and investment flow.

He said the most sought-after Peruvian products in said European country are organic —including quinoa and kiwicha— as well as chocolate, among other products that have started to gain popularity.

"More Peruvian products can be purchased at markets and grocery stores now," Dewez was quoted as saying by the official gazette El Peruano.

Belgium-Peru relations enjoy a good atmosphere, considering institutions and ministries from both countries are in touch.

The ambassador said the recent presentation of Belgium's trade office in Peru proves trade ties are on the right track.

"Besides, more and more Peruvian tourists visit Belgium as a result of the Schengen visa exemption agreement," he added.

Likewise, Dewez expects more Belgians will visit Peru to explore its diverse cultural and culinary attractions.

He explained that, even though Belgium is a small European country, it comprises three large regions. They all have an intense commercial activity and investments around the world.

According to the Association of Peruvian Exporters (Adex), Peru-Belgium trade balance favors Peru. In 2016, exports to the European country amounted to US$623 million, whereas imports totaled US$167 million, leaving a surplus of US$456 million.
