A study to assess gastronomic tourism in Peru revealed that 82% of foreign vacationers believe the Inca country is a gastronomic destination famous for its traditional food.
Conducted by the country's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru), the investigation is intended to determine foreign visitors' behavior towards local
gastronomy.
The markets assessed included the United States, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, France and Spain.
According to the study, travelers spend an average of 25% of their travel budget on food.
Food expenses are greater
among the Spaniards, whose average intake amounts to US$530, followed by Argentineans (US$381) and Colombians (US$348).
Popular food
Additionally, vacationers try between five and eight different dishes during their visit, with
lomo saltado being the most popular, followed by Peru's flagship dish
ceviche and the traditional
causa.
Pisco sour was, by far, the most common drink, earning 79% of respondents' approval.
On the other hand, potatoes, fish and shellfish, as well as lemons, were the most popular products.
"As evidenced in the study, gastronomy strengthens its presence among visitors to Peru. Our food stands out for its fusion, mix of cultures, techniques, innovation and unique flavors, as well as our
globally-acclaimed chefs who promote flagship dishes [overseas]," PromPeru underlines.
