Peru's national soccer team has climbed to 12th place in the latest FIFA world rankings —its highest ever position.

Coached by Argentinean Ricardo Gareca, the red-white squad moved up three spots from last month's ratings.

The national team's new position has been attributed to its recent triumphs against Bolivia and Ecuador as part of the 2018 FIFA World Cup's qualifiers.

In this sense, Peru surpassed football teams from Wales (13th), England (15th), Uruguay (16th), Italy (17th), Croatia (18th), Sweden (23rd) and Turkey (27th), among others.

World champions Germany pushed Brazil back into the second spot to return to the top of the list.

Portugal came third, followed by Argentina (4th), Belgium (5th), Poland (6th), Sweden (7th), France (8th), Chile (9th), Colombia (10th) and Spain (11th).

As for the South American Football Confederation's (CONMEBOL) rankings, Peru holds the fifth position, thus surpassing Uruguay, Ecuador, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Venezuela.

The Incas have two more matches to play as part of the qualifying tournament towards Russia 2018 World Cup.

The red-white will have to face Argentina and Colombia to grab a place at 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.
