Peru's First-Vice President Martin Vizcarra stepped down as Transport and Communications Minister on Monday morning following questionings regarding Chinchero International Airport Project.

The resignation was confirmed by Vizcarra himself during a statement given at Lima's Government Palace, while joined by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

"I have submitted my resignation as Transport and Communications Minister to the President," he announced.

"I am doing this because I have always prioritized the national interest in all my decisions," he pointed out.

In this sense, the government official underlined his ten-month administration was characterized by responsibility, dedication and honesty, as is well-known by local and regional authorities he has worked with.

Likewise, Vizcarra affirmed he would continue to support President Kuczynski's administration as First-Vice President.

Chinchero Airport

Vizcarra on Sunday announced the Transport and Communications Ministry's decision to render Chinchero International Airport project concession contract null and void.

The resolution owed to the lack of consensus, as well as doubts regarding the contract and addendum, recently signed by the current administration.

Today, the Comptroller General’s Office will submit its report on the said addendum, which stipulates the government’s US$264-million self-funding to save US$590 million in interests.
