Peru takes measures to preserve environment and heritage during Dakar Rally

14:27 | Lima, Jan. 4.

The Dakar Rally returns to Peru after a five-year absence, and the Government has worked hand-in-hand with organizers to offer an unforgettable experience that cares for the environment and national heritage.

One of the actions taken into consideration —probably the most important one as it leaves a legacy to the country— is the construction of permanent informative panels and milestones, which was completed in coordination with Culture and Environment Ministries.

125 of these structures have been built along the route and entailed an investment of over US$185,000.

The objective is to delimit natural areas and protected archaeological sites so that spectators can enjoy the race from the designated viewing areas without endangering spaces of national heritage.

On the other hand, some 250 individuals will clean the spectators' area during and after the race.

Likewise, a 40-vehicle caravan will patrol the zone to ensure respect and protection of protected archaeological areas and monuments located near the route.

This way, vehicles and people will be prevented from entering zones outside the permitted area.

As is known, the 40th edition of Dakar is slated to start on January 6 in Lima at Peruvian Army Headquarters, known as Pentagonito.

The race will then run towards Bolivia and Argentina.
