Peru's National Superintendence of Migrations on Wednesday announced the immigration status change application process will be simplified starting Monday, March 19, in order to provide a better service to foreign citizens.

This will help foreigners get the Carnet de Extranjeria (Peruvian identification card for foreign residents).

Carried out as part of State administrative simplification efforts, the new procedure will require foreigners to attend immigration offices only twice during the entire process: the first one to submit documents, as well as to provide biometric data (photo, fingerprints, and signature); and a second one to pick up the aforementioned card.

Under the previous scheme, applicants had to make up to five visits to the office before completing the process, so —on some occasions— they opted to hire legal representatives, thus increasing the cost.

Personal and simple process

Now, with this simplified version, foreign citizens must pay the change of status processing fee (S/117.60 or about US$36) at Banco de la Nacion (National Bank) or via State-run online payment platform Pagalo.pe, collect the required documents, and make an appointment online.

In their first visit, applicants will be given access to a personal account to keep track of the process.

After that, applications will undergo an evaluation process.

Once approved, foreign citizens will be notified via their personal account, so that they can apply for the Carnet de Extranjeria.

Foreigners shall pay the application fee (S/49.90 or about US$15.3) and book an appointment for their preferred date online.

Applicants shall visit the office one more time to pick up —in person— the sought-after card, the one that will prove their status as a foreign citizen residing in Peru.
