A total of 103,854 foreigners live in Peru, 61% of which are men and 39% women, according to National Superintendence of Migrations data updated as at 2016, National Statistics and Informatics Institute (INEI) reported on Friday.

The document states that 13.4% of these immigrants came from Colombia, 10.2% from Spain, 8.9% from the United States, 7.5% from Argentina, 6.6% from Ecuador and 6.4% from Venezuela.

Moreover, 6.3% of these incomers came from Chile, 5.7% from Brazil, 4.9% from China, 4.5% from Bolivia, 2.8% from Mexico, 2.5% from Italy, 2% from France, 1.6% from Germany, among others.

It must be noted that 74.1% of foreigners in Peru are aged between 15 and 49 years.

Foreign nationals must comply with the New Immigration Law, introduced on March 1 2017, which facilitates entry of highly qualified workers, investors, volunteers and foreign students who contribute to the country's development.

Enacted on March 27 this year, the Immigration Law regulations outline rights and duties of foreigners for the performance of formal business activities subject to tax, migratory regularization and assistance to vulnerable people.

The new act will help ensure that all foreign nationals comply with the stated duties; otherwise, they will be penalized or even expelled from the country.

On average, 45 out of every 100 foreign residents in Peru enjoy a worker status.

Furthermore, 46 out of 100 of these immigrants are professional workers.
