A total of 446,400 new jobs were created in Peru between January and August 2017, up 2.8% from the same period last year, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported on Monday.

According to INEI's National Household Survey (ENAHO), the economically active population (EAP) in the country increased to 16,687,300 people.

Employment up 3.2% in urban areas

By area of residence, employment rose 3.2% (392,500 people) in urban areas and 1.4% (54,000 people) in rural.

Urban regions accounted for 76.8% (12,812,000 people) of the country's economically active population and the rural sector made up the remaining 23.2%.

Considering natural regions, the Jungle saw the most growth at 4.0% (80,900 people), over the same period in 2016, followed by the Coast at 3.2% (281,600 people), and the Highlands at 1.6% (84,000 people).

Likewise, the survey reveals tourism contributes 4% of Peru's GDP and provides more than a million jobs.
