Peru's working population grew 1.8%, resulting in 294,800 new jobs in May-July 2017, from the same period last year, National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) head Anibal Sanchez informed.
According to INEI's National Household Survey (ENAHO), the working population amounted to 16,439,600 in the analyzed period.
Regions and sectors
Geographically speaking, the coastal region posted the highest increase at 2.8% (+249,600 jobs), mainly the northern area, where employment grew 8.3% (+172,100).
In the highlands, northern and central zones experienced growth rates of 2.9% (+26,100) and 1.9% (+39,300), respectively.
However, employment decreased 1.5% (-36,500) in southern highlands during the said period.
As for economic activities, the services sector rose 2.7% (+180,800), whereas trade expanded 2.1% (+64,300).
On the other hand, the working population engaged in primary activities like
agriculture,
fisheries and
mining grew 1.8% (+72,700).
Lastly, the
manufacturing sector registered a 0.7% rise (+10,400), while construction contracted 3.7% (-33,500).
