Peru President: Summit of the Americas to be successful

00:00 | Lima, Mar. 28.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday underlined various leaders and heads of government have already confirmed their participation in the Summit of the Americas to be hosted by the Inca country next month.

According to the former Ambassador to Ottawa, the presence of different leaders —such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau— ensures the success of said coming international event.

"The first call I received was that of Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, who expressed all his support, and this happened once I took office," Mr. Vizcarra told reporters.

"Just like him, other leaders reconfirmed their participation, and we believe this meeting in Lima will be a success," he added.

The Peruvian leader went on to say Mr. Trudeau had also reaffirmed his commitment to continue strengthening bilateral relations.

When asked about the withdrawal of President Maduro's invitation to the regional summit, he pointed out foreign policy is a very sensitive issue.

For this reason, specialists are consulted, which in this case is the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

"Decisions have been made in certain topics, not only on the part of Peru as a country, but of diverse Organization of American States (OAS) member nations. Yet, we must let the Foreign Affairs Ministry give the pertinent recommendations on the matter," Mr. Vizcarra noted.

The Summit of the Americas will take place in Lima on April 13-14, 2018.
