12:51 | Piura (Piura region), Oct. 28.

President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Saturday visited Peru's northern Piura region to supervise cleaning and channeling works on Piura and Chira rivers.

Efforts comprise the Reconstruction with Changes Plan designed to refurbish areas damaged by "Coastal El Niño" phenomenon between January and March this year.

The event was characterized by heavy rains, landslides and floods, which destroyed infrastructure and crops, thus leaving many citizens homeless.

Joined by Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Jose Manuel Hernandez, the Head of State overflew the course of both rivers in order to monitor clean-up efforts.

It must be noted all these activities have already created over 6,000 jobs in said region, through the Rural Agrarian Productive Development Program (Agro Rural), which is run by the Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry.

In this sense, the Kuczynski administration has invested S/317 million (about US$97.59 million) to channel eight stretches of Piura and Chira rivers.

It is worth mentioning 282 machines currently work double shifts to this end; other 200 will join the operation in the coming weeks.
