Peru President opens 10th World Potato Congress in Cusco

13:11 | Cusco (Cusco region), May. 28.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Monday morning opened the 10th edition of the World Potato Congress in South-Andean city of Cusco.

In his speech, the Head of State affirmed potatoes are part of Peruvian culture, as they are linked to the Inca country’s history.

Furthermore, he noted Peru is a nation of diversity —hosting various realities— which commits his administration to adopting a decentralized approach.

Prior to the ceremony, President Vizcarra and Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Gustavo Mostajo toured the stands showcasing diverse native potato varieties.

It must be noted this is the first time a Latin American country hosts this international event.

The 10th World Potato Congress brings together scientists and professionals linked to the study, conservation, and commercialization of this Andean tuber.

The event takes place at Cusco Convention Center and will run thru May 31.
