Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Friday called on fellow Peruvians to support firefighters' life-saving work by promoting a sense of responsibility and prudence.
"It [the Peruvian fire brigade] is a
volunteer department that has made countless sacrifices. It is our duty to support it, as a country aspiring to modernization," the Head of State affirmed.
"I
appreciate your work; I remember the sacrifice of those who have left us. And I hereby ask all of you to support firefighters," he added.
Speaking at the launch of "#Yo tambien soy bombero" (I, Too, Am a Firefighter) campaign, the top official underlined the government's 2018 budget will consider greater resources for the men and women in red.
"We need to provide firefighters with more material and physical support. We need more fire stations, and we need to renew their equipment and
turnout gear […]," he observed.
On the other hand, the Peruvian leader underscored the role of citizens in facilitating firefighters' work.
In this respect, he stressed the need to promote safety in terms of gas and electrical connections, since "short-circuits are the main cause of fires in Peru."
"The whole country must foster a culture of responsibility and prudence so that firefighters can do their job," he pointed out.
Interior Minister Carlos Basombrio, Mr. Kuczynski's wife
Nancy Lange and Peru's General Volunteer Firefighters Department representatives joined the statesman on the occasion.
