President Martin Vizcarra on Friday noted the Chavin de Huantar military operation has remained engraved in the history of Peru as one the most successful hostage rescue missions in the world.
With said mission, the Armed Forces renewed their commitment to upholding and safeguarding the rule of law in Peru, the Head of State affirmed.
Remarks were made as he presided over the ceremony marking the
21st anniversary of said operation at the replica of Japanese ambassador's residence located in Lima district of Chorrillos.
"
The Chavin de Huantar operation has remained engraved in the history of our country and world as one of the most successful military maneuvers, with which our Armed Forces renewed their commitment to defending and preserving the rule of law in the country," he expressed.
The President also emphasized that national anxiety situations, such as hostage-takings by terrorists, constitute "history that cannot repeat itself," and "our Armed Forces won't let this happen at all."
Likewise, he recognized the courage, commitment, and performance of the heroic
Chavin de Huantar commandos —present at the ceremony— to whom he expressed gratitude for putting their lives at risk to save that of their fellow citizens in distress situation.
Mr. Vizcarra also thanked them for "defeating terrorism in a thorough manner, thus ensuring there is no room for those who threaten freedom in Peru."
The Peruvian leader affirmed the Armed Forces marked a milestone in the collective memory of the country, and said it was an honor to commemorate the commandos’ sacrifice to build a peaceful, democratic and threat-free country for Peruvians.
"Peru's perpetual glory and profound gratitude to you, our heroes," he concluded.
As is known, Chavin de Huantar commandos took part in the rescue of hostages held captive by terrorist Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) in Peru back in 1997.
A total of 71 people alive were released in said mega operation.
On the other hand, the raid claimed the lives of then-Supreme Court Justice Carlos Giusti, commandos Juan Valer and Raul Jimenez. The MRTA members died during the military rescue operation.
