President Martin Vizcarra on Friday presided over the ceremony marking the 21st Anniversary of Chavin de Huantar Operation.

This event was intended to honor each of the Chavin de Huantar commandos, who took part in the rescue of hostages held captive by terrorist Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) at the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima back in 1997.

A total of 71 people alive were released in said mega operation.

On the other hand, the raid claimed the lives of then-Supreme Court Justice Carlos Giusti, commandos Juan Valer Sandoval and Raul Jimenez, as well as all 14 MRTA members.

The ceremony took place at the replica of Japanese ambassador’s residence located at Las Palmas Ave. in Lima district of Chorrillos.
