Las Palmas Air Base will be the location for Pope Francis' mass in capital city Lima, said Labor Minister Alfonso Grados, head of the Papal Visit Organization Committee in Peru.
Situated in Santiago de Surco district, the military facility was placed ahead of Costa Verde seashore —another possible scenario for such religious service.
According to Grados, Las Palmas meets safety requirements to accommodate the event.
The area has adequate access points, secure evacuation routes in emergency scenarios, and areas for handicapped and elderly people.
As previously stated, the decision was made based on assessments by Peru's Interior Ministry and Civil Defense.
Pope Francis will arrive in
Peru on January 17, 2018, a day before his planned papal visit.
In addition to Lima, the 80-year-old Pontiff's trip will include cities
Puerto Maldonado and Trujillo in rainforest Madre de Dios and northern La Libertad regions, respectively.
