The new Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio reaffirmed Peru's decision to withdraw President Maduro's invitation to the Summit of the Americas taking place in Lima on April 13-14.

After being sworn-in as Peru's top foreign affairs official, Popolizio said the lack of free elections in Venezuela negates the slightest notion of democracy and constitutes an "insurmountable impediment to participating in the Summit of the Americas."

"It is a firm decision that is not up for revision," he stated.

According to the diplomat, the defense of democracy and respect for human rights, in the face of all types of threats, are the principles of Peru's foreign policy, a State policy and moral commitment the Inca nation will not give up.

Based on this, he explained, the Lima Group and the actions taken in conjunction with the Organization of American States (OAS) seek a democratic solution to the severe political and humanitarian crisis facing the neighboring country.

"For this reason, we do not support its Government's decision to hinder free, fair, legitimate, and credible elections, a fact that negates the slightest notion of democracy," Popolizio was quoted as saying.

As is known, the Inca nation had withdrawn the invitation previously extended to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to attend the 8th Summit of the Americas.

The decision was then announced by Peru's former Foreign Affairs Minister Cayetana Aljovin and later backed by ex-President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.
