Peru: Legislative powers to boost exports, public and private investment

14:15 | Lima, May. 8.

The approval of legislative faculties —requested by the Executive Branch to Congress— will lead to higher exports, as well as increased public and private investment, Association of Peruvian Exporters (Adex) Chairman Juan Varilias projected.

"Yes, we want to cooperate with the Executive Branch in the studies and proposals, so that measures are duly developed and fulfill the objective of helping consolidate job-creating activities, as well as boosting GDP," he told Andina news agency.

Thus, each additional percentage point in Peru's GDP growth will create 60,000 new formal jobs, which also means reducing poverty by 1.4%, he pointed out.

Furthermore, the Adex officer noted the Inca country should bet on an export industry that generates quality jobs and productive clusters located in developed special economic zones.

"The Government bets on public investment to reinvigorate the economy, which is good in essence (…)," Varilias added.

Agro-exports

The Adex representative also recalled Prime Minister Villanueva had identified the promotion of agro-exports as a Government strategy. The sector is capable of creating 262 jobs for every US$1 million in shipments.

Besides, this segment was the only one that grew steadily over the last decade.

"If we want to promote other sectors, we should assess how to expand a model which is successful," Varilias expressed.
