Peru Gov't commits to decentralization by transferring resources to cities, regions

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday assured his administration reaffirms its vocation for decentralization by transferring S/6.225 billion (about US$1.901 billion) to regional and local governments for the implementation of various social development projects.

"(...) We are reaffirming our vocation for decentralization. Peruvians can solve their problems by joining efforts, (we mean) the national, regional, and local governments," the President expressed.

Remarks were made at a ceremony, at which he granted symbolic checks to mayors of the areas, where development projects will be implemented.

In response to citizens' demand not to allow corruption in public resources spending, the Head of State handed over the list of works to Comptroller General Nelson Shack for assessment purposes.

According to Mr. Vizcarra, the S/6.225 billion (about US$1.901 billion) will benefit more than 500 municipalities and regional governments.

The resources guarantee projects will remain under implementation until completed and be put at the service of the population.
