Peru's fishing industry experienced a rebound in 2017, growing 4.67% after a 10.1% decline in 2016, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported.
The sector ended 2017 on a positive note, even though fishing production decreased 66.87% in December —the month of analysis.
This was due to the fact that Peru reported no landings of
anchovy for indirect
human consumption, following a suspension of the second fishing season because of the high presence of juveniles.
On the other hand, fishing for
direct human consumption increased 4.91% in December 2017, driven by larger hauls of species destined for cured (29.1%), canned (26.7%), and fresh consumption (13.3%) products.
Also, a 4.5% decline was observed in the capture of species destined for frozen products.
As is known, Peru's fishing industry advanced 286.12% in November 2013, the highest year-on-year increase ever recorded.
