Peru Congress to debate President Kuczynski's resignation today

10:54 | Lima, Mar. 22.

Peruvian Congress will debate Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's resignation as President of the Republic on Thursday afternoon, as agreed by the Parliament's Board of Spokespersons.

According to Congress Chairman Luis Galarreta, the plenary session will kick off at 4:00 PM (local time).

It must be noted the debate will be suspended at a certain time on Thursday and will resume on Friday with the presence of First Vice-President Martin Vizcarra, who is designated to take over the Presidency of the Republic.

If succession is confirmed, the former Moquegua Region Governor will face one of the toughest challenges of his political career.

As is known, Kuczynski on Wednesday resigned from office and affirmed there will be a constitutional and orderly transition of power.

He confirmed his decision during a televised address to the nation.

Martin Vizcarra

Engineer Vizcarra was born in Lima on March 22, 1963, but moved to Moquegua, where he started his political career and was Governor between 2011 and 2014.

He is part of Peruvians for Change (PPK) party and has been serving as Ambassador to Canada.
