A generation of compatriots will benefit from the recently-approved constitutional reform granting the right to citizenship to Peruvian parents' children born abroad, lawmaker and bill author Luz Salgado pointed out.

According to Salgado, Article 52 of the Constitution stated that Peruvians born abroad had to be registered before the age of 18 to get the national citizenship.

Nevertheless, thanks to said reform, the age limit has been removed.

In this regard, the legislator noted many Peruvians born outside the Inca country were not registered due to omission, their parents' illegal status, or difficulties to access the corresponding consulates overseas.

"We have done a job of equal rights, of equity," the lawmaker expressed.

"Every child of a Peruvian parents, regardless of age, can apply for the DNI [National ID Card]," Salgado noted.

"It is enough to prove [the person] is the son or daughter of a Peruvian. With this, we amended the omission of Article 52," she added.

After learning about the reform, compatriots formed queues outside consulates in Venezuela and Italy to obtain such benefit.

The citizenship amendment was passed on Thursday by Congress at a second voting session.
