Peruvian Congress on Thursday passed the amendment to Article 52 of the Constitution with the purpose of granting the right to citizenship to children born abroad to Peruvian parents.

Legislator and bill author Luz Salgado explained children of Peruvian citizens must have the same right to be regarded as "Peruvians by birth," even if they were born outside the Inca country.

Approved at a second voting session, this initiative removes the age limit (35 years old) to apply for Peruvian citizenship in such cases.

For her part, lawmaker Ursula Letona affirmed this reform will allow "people over the legal age, born abroad to a Peruvian father or mother, to decide [if they want] to become Peruvians by birth."

"This decision is extremely important because it enables these persons —and not their parents— to be the ones who can decide to become Peruvians by birth," she concluded.
