Peru: Access reopens to Willkaraqay site in Machu Picchu

10:28 | Cusco (Cusco region), Apr. 26.

State-run Decentralized Culture Directorate of Cusco (DDCC) specialists on Thursday confirmed that the archaeological site of Willkaraqay —located inside Machu Picchu Archaeological Park— has reopened after it was forced to close due to instability.

The path had structural problems that caused instability in the 15 linear meter platform. The situation forced authorities to close the stretch for 11 days.

"Repair works were undertaken, and the platform was restored from its foundations to resolve this situation, thus renovating the entire affected stretch," explained Francisco Huarcaya, responsible for the maintenance of the Inca Trail Network.

As part of the works, a retaining wall —dating back to Inca times— was carefully taken apart to give the right specialized treatment.

Visitors to the Inca Trail were not affected by the maintenance activities since they used alternative trails under the guidance of Machu Picchu guards.

Currently, the access point to the archaeological complex of Willkaraqay is in good condition and is being used by tourists who walk the Inca Trail Network leading to the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu.
