Some 1,510 Peruvian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) pave the way and engage actively into Chilean market, totaling over US$1 billion in exports, Peruvian Ambassador to Chile Jorge Luis Valdez informed on Thursday.
The diplomat said some 155 large Peruvian firms play a major role in the fellow South American economy along with SMEs.
A total of 25 major companies have entered Chile's traditional sectors (mining, fisheries, agriculture, oil and natural gas), along with 48 SMEs, meaning 73 firms have a presence in Chile.
On the other hand, 130 large enterprises and 1,462 SMEs joined the non-traditional sector, which is important as they add the largest number of jobs.
Ambassador Valdez explained mining accounts for 31.4% of
Peruvian exports to Chile, while fishing, oil and gas, and agricultural shipments for 4.71%, 2.26% and 0.11%, respectively.
The non-traditional sector includes chemical (16.9%), farming (14.12%), metal-mechanic (8.91%) and non-metallic mining (8.13%) industries, as well as others like paper, wood, craftwork, leather and jewelry (5.3%), textile (5.3%) and metallurgy (2.31%).
"This shows that Peruvian SMEs are paving the way into the Chilean market, and this is very important," he continued.
Precisely, one of the five main topics in
Peru-Chile Binational Cabinet refers to foreign trade and investments, a key theme when it comes to economic growth in both countries and development of their peoples.
Valdez affirmed bilateral trade is dynamic, although Chilean investments are larger compared to those of Peru.
He went on to say the Andean country imports US$1.152 billion in Chilean products each year.
