Mild quakes shake Peruvian capital

So far, eight mild earthquakes have jolted Matucana —a Huarochiri province's district in the Lima highlands— since early hours of Thursday, keeping inhabitants on alert.


Five shaking events were reported early morning, triggering landslides in the Carretera Central Highway.


According to Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP), the first 4.8-magnitude quake struck 3:19 AM 10km southeast of Matucana at a depth of 40km.

Soon after, 4.1- and 4.0-magnitude aftershocks occurred at 3:24 AM and 3:26 AM, respectively.

IGP informed another earthquake measured 3.5 on the Richter Scale hit Matucana's southern area at 3:48 AM.

The fifth struck around an hour later at 4:53 AM.

Subsequent temblors measured up to 3.3 hit the same area later at 7:21 AM, 7:22 AM and 11:05 AM.
