Peru's Judicial Branch on Tuesday approved release to house arrest for Shining Path terrorist group member Osman Morote.
Below is a list of his crimes and the trials he has undergone.
- Morote was arrested in 1988 and sentenced to 25 years in prison for the crime of
terrorism —a sentence he completed on June 11, 2013.
- However, he was not released at that time because the Judiciary placed him under arrest giving him preventive detention for the Soras case, known as "The Caravan of Death."
Such crime took place on July 16, 1984, when 117 people from the Soras peasant community and seven adjoining areas were killed by
Shining Path terrorists.
- Morote's preventive detention period was due to expire in July this year, according to anti-terrorist prosecutor Milko Ruiz.
- He is being prosecuted for the Tarata Street bombing in the heart of Lima's Miraflores district. The attack occurred in July 1992 and left 25 dead.
- Also, he is being tried in the Perseo case, which dates back to 2014, when the National Police arrested 28 members of the Movement for Amnesty and Fundamental Rights (Movadef), which is believed to be the façade for Shining Path.
- According to the prosecutor's investigation, Movadef was financed by former Shining Path leader Florindo Flores Hala, known as "Comrade Artemio."
It must be noted Peru's most wanted terrorist,
Abimael Guzman, was captured on September 12th, 1992, marking the defeat of Shining Path —the most bloodthirsty and cruel terrorist group the country has ever seen.
