Jefferson Farfan breaks goal-scoring record for Peru

12:23 | Lima, May. 30.

Peruvian striker Jefferson Farfan scored his 25th goal for the national team, thus surpassing the previous 24-goal record set by star player Teodoro 'Lolo' Fernandez.

Such achievement occurred last night during a friendly match against Scotland, which Peru won 2-0.

The goal was scored in the first minutes of the second half when a shot by Russia-based FC Lokomotiv star Jefferson Farfan —assisted by Yoshimar Yotun— ended up in the net (47th minute).

This was Peru's second goal of the game and the 25th Farfan has scored for the national team.

The forward played as number 9 —position Paolo Guerrero used to hold before he was banned from the World Cup.

Farfan started at Deportivo Municipal club, and then joined Alianza Lima, one of Peru's leading soccer clubs.

His debut with the national team was on 23 February 2003, in a friendly against Haiti. He was just 19 years old.

The striker scored his first goal for Peru in that game. Since then, he has played for the national squad on several occasions.

In the list of top goal scorers, Farfan ranks behind Teofilo Cubillas (26) and Paolo Guerrero (32).
