The Peruvian Government has decided to reopen its embassy in New Zealand given the high level of coordination and support in multilateral issues of common interest.
According to a resolution published in El Peruano official gazette, one of the actions underlying the Foreign Affairs Ministry's Strategic Plan 2017-2019 is to deepen and broaden relations with
New Zealand and its multilateral mechanisms.
Both countries maintain a high-level of coordination and support in multilateral issues of common interest such as climate change, indigenous peoples' rights, human rights, and social affairs.
Likewise, New Zealand has shown support for Peru's aspiration to become a full member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
"In this sense, the reopening of the Peruvian Embassy in New Zealand would promote closer links in political-diplomatic, geostrategic, economic-trade, academic,
cultural,
consular and cooperation areas,” the document reads.
The embassy's temporary closure took place in 2010, in line with the austerity policy implemented in the Foreign Affairs Ministry's budget so as to make better public spending decisions.
