Despite the recent defeat against France, Peruvians' support for their national team remains intact —both in the homeland and abroad— since they are pleased with players' efforts throughout the 2018 World Cup matches so far.
"We have a great affection for the guys because they have made every effort on the pitch," said one of the Peruvian fans at the end of
Thursday's clash at Ekaterinburg Arena, where the Incas outnumbered French supporters.
In Russia, the support was almost unanimous not only at the stadium —where
fans gave a standing ovation at the end of the match— but at commercial establishments where Peruvians regularly convene.
Likewise, in Lima, supporters showed their love for the red-white squad. "We are out of the World Cup, but proud of this team, which left it all on the field," commented an enthusiastic fan at a park in Lima's Miraflores district.
The same atmosphere was present at Lima's Main Square and National Stadium. "In spite of our elimination, people believe in this group, see you in the next World Cup in Qatar."
Another enthusiast added: "Peruvians showed true heart and courage, and always put soul, heart, and life (into the game)."
"This is not over. There will be more world cups, and we'll be willing to cheer on them. Even after the goal, they always held their heads high," he noted.
In both Lima locations —equipped with huge screens— the crowd danced to the beat of several bands, even after the defeat.
