Peru: Government accepts production minister's resignation

12:07 | Lima, Apr. 25.

Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva on Wednesday announced the Peruvian Government has accepted the resignation of Production Minister Daniel Cordova.

The Cabinet's chief said he had a long conversation with Cordova after a television program aired a video of him offering to sack his deputy minister, during a meeting with artisanal fishing union officers.

"He (Daniel Cordova) has tendered his resignation (…) and we settled the situation rapidly. The decision was made in coordination with the minister," Villanueva stated.

The Prime Minister remarked that Cordova understood the need to make a decision when there is circumstantial evidence of this nature.

"Our Cabinet intends to be close to the people, holding talks with everyone, with those we agree and those we disagree. Our decisions cannot prevail over people's rights," he said.

Daniel Cordova was sworn in as Production Minister on April 2, 2018.

Shortly after his resignation was made public, the resigning official remarked —via Twitter— that he leaves the post to prevent political issues from interfering with a solution for artisanal fishing issues.
