Peru Gov't reaffirms commitment to defend native communities

10:00 | Lima, Apr. 21.

The Peruvian Government will defend the nation's indigenous communities and their territories, Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva affirmed.

In this sense, the Cabinet Chief expressed his deep sorrow over the assassination of Shipibo-Konibo community leader Olivia Arevalo, The homicide took place in eastern rainforest Ucayali region last Thursday.

According to Villanueva, the news shocked him, as well as President Martin Vizcarra. Plus, he pointed out "we must not allow violence to reign in the country."

"We will be completely supportive when it comes to defending native communities and their territories (…)," the government official expressed.

"Nowhere in the country or under no circumstance can we allow violence, extortion or murder to govern our actions," he added.

It must be noted Olivia Arevalo —a staunch defender of the Shipibo-Konibo people's cultural rights— was shot dead in the intercultural community known as "Victoria Gracia."

Early on Friday, the United Nations System in Peru and the Federation of Native Communities of Ucayali (Feconau) strongly condemned the indigenous leader's murder.
